Wednesday Rules Meetings

On Wednesday, October 29, Seekonk Speedway held rules meetings for the Pure Stocks, Late Models and Pro Stocks. There were no changes made that were significant in any of the divisions. Here is an overview of changes:

Pure Stocks:
* There was a clarifcation on the starting position of the previous weeks winner. The previous weeks winner will start last in the next event. He/she will start behind any cars that were not here the previous week and behind all cars that did not complete qualifying.

* There was also a clarification of the frame height rule. It will be 5 1/2" at the lowest point of the frame. The height will no longer be taken at the seam welds.

* Driveshaft hoops are mandatory. They are to be 2 1/4" x 1/4", and there are to be three of them. See the 2009 rule book for details.

Late Models:
* The only change will be for the allowance of the A.C.T. cars to compete with the ARC rules will be from 2 events to 5 events in 2009.

* There will be NO changes to the chassis, suspension, or drivetrain to the cars in 2009.

Pro Stocks:
* The only change will be the allowance of the slab sides for the bodies. This will give the bodies a more customized look and will help int he visual aid to help differentiate the Pro Stocks from the Late Models.

Again, please refer to the 2009 rule book for any clarifications when it is published.

Some notes from the rules meetings 10/28

Here are some of the notes from the rules meetings tonight for the SYRA, Street Stocks and the Sport Trucks:

David and the rest of the staff are looking to introduce an entry-level 4 cylinder division for the Fast Friday Series. No rules have been put to paper, but it is said to be similar to the Pure Stocks, as the only modifications allowed will be for safety only. Keep an eye out for more information.

The Seekonk Youth Racing Association:

* The only allowable seals on the engines will be the Seekonk Speedway seals.
* Eligibility of the racers between the 600 and 750 classes will be discussed at a later time.
* Drivers who are eligible to compete in the SYRA (18 years or younger) and have the opportunity to race in our Saturday program will be allowed to compete on both nights.

Street Stocks:

* Jacking bolts are now permitted front and rear in the Camaros and the full frame cars.
* There will be a shock rule at $65.00 retail per shock.
* Bolt on sub frame connectors will be permitted, as there is an issue with the corrosion on the older cars. These cannot be welded to any part of the car.
* The tread width will be a set number for ALL cars. This will open up the wheel rules, but the offset must be the same left to right. There will also be a weight rule with the wheels. The weight and the tread width are still to be determined.
* Feature laps for the Street Stocks will be increased to 25 laps. There will be no increase in purse.

Sport Trucks:

* All rev limiters will continue to be located on the dash. All wiring will be covered in CLEAR plastic tubing. There will be no connectors located in the cab of the truck.
* Tie-rod ends can be replaced with STEEL heim joints. Both inner and outer may be replaced. The rod between the joints may be aluminium. The centerlink MUST remain stock, save for the allowing of drilling out the studs on the centerlink to accomodate for the heim joints.
* Driveshaft tunnels are permitted, but not mandatory.
* Panhard bars will be allowed.
* The bottom of the door window frames may be removed from the body. It is no longer neccessary to have them on the truck.
* As with the Street Stocks, the feature laps will increase to 25 laps. There will be no increase in purse.

Please refer to the rulebook, which is scheduled to be out by the end of the year for specifications and clearifications on these and any other rule changes.

This is a note from Tom Curley, concerning the state of the Late Model tire situation. Dave e-mailed him about all of the concerns, and this is what was replied:

Hi David,
Unfortunately they are right to complain. When the tires were switched from the US made RS to the Canadian made LS (end of July)) the tires tested great. The only problem with them was they were too small!! Averaged around 84 with some at 84.2 and others at 83.7. They still tested great even with horrible stagger and there were no real 'growing size' issues.

We have been using these tires since around the middle of August. We will finish the year with them, but Goodyear has done a lot of research on what has gone wrong with the consistency of the sizes etc.

Here are some suggestions you can pass on to your people to help them through the balance of the year.

1. There is no difference with the compound from the US made tires.

2. The new right side tires actually wear as well or better than the old US RS units.

3. The handwritten labels are meaningless as we don't know where they are being measured ---outer rim, center of tire, blown up or not etc. AVOID using the sizes on the new RS tires until GY gets the computer in place and we get back to accuracy. In other words, have everyone 'tape' the tires on the outer edge just like we did for the past 40 years. As an example a unit that is labeled by the factory as an 85.1 might actually measure under the tape as small as 84 or as large as 85.7...I know because I have measured at least 300 of these myself with a tape.

4. There seems to be nothing stable about what tires build extraordinary size and which ones stay constant within a 1/2 inch.

5. The units that seem to work best are the ones that measure the smallest cold off the piles. This will not make many of the Seekonk teams happy as they traditionally have wanted a whole lot more stagger than anywhere else where the tires are used, but the difference is that you leave a 'cushion' for size growth as you can grow the 84 or 84.2 units by at least an inch or inch and 1/2, compared to the old US built units which you might get 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch maximum.

6. We have found the best way to help these tires retain their size is to scuff the tires no more than 8 laps with 25psi at 3/4 speed. Bring the scuff tires in and take ALL the air out of them until they cool. Then put 24-26 pounds in them and practice like a full heat race of 12-15 laps of hard racing. Resize the unit, take the air build up back to your starting point (24-26) and let them cool off completely before racing them. [Note: some of the teams are finding that the tires are better as a repeat tire than they are as a new tire...we have certainly found that the tires retain their speed if they retain their size from a durability standpoint.

7. Finally, the Goodyear engineers tell me they think they have found the problem with the tire as it relates to radical growth. The are coming to Thunder Road this weekend to conduct another test with the remake tires. (Something about the cord stretching when we asked them to increase significantly the original RS build. I am guessing that the elasticity of the cords was compromised with the increase sizing we required and thus the problems. As soon as we had our first race they actually stopped production of the tire but obviously we will have to struggle through the balance of the year.

I will gather as many RS tires as I can after this weekend and measure up the smallest I can find to get to you for the DAV if you think that might help your teams. I will also let you know what the Goodyear people have to say after the test this weekend.

I am sure they will fix the problem. Sorry you are facing the disgruntled teams, but have them bear with us and we will get things fixed and appreciate their co-operation.

A note about Late Model Tires

I justed wanted to pass this along to the late Model teams. Goodyear
has changed the part number on the right side tires from D2682 to
D2882. I called Tom Curley about this and he said they moved production
operations from Ohio to Canada and for some reason they needed to
change the part number but there is no change to the tire the ACT tour
has already used them with no issues. There is one noticable diffenece,
they don't have the yellow Goodyear name on them and from what I was
told, they where so behind because of the change this process was left
off to speed up production. By the way we have more tires in this week.
Pass the word.

Thanks

All tires must be purchased from Seekonk Speedway. The manufacturer’s identification number on each tire will be used to identify and register tires.

2. TCA-Team Current Allowance. The TCA is the current maximum number of tires a team may register and use in a race. The starting TCA for the Pro Stocks and Late Model teams is 12. A team’s TCA is increased by 2 for each regular event raced and increased by 4 for selected long distance events raced (Pro Stocks only).

4. Practice tires. Practice tires are tires that are used only for practice and are not raced on. Practice tires are not to be registered into a team’s inventory. If a team decides to race on a practice tire, it must enter it into inventory prior to racing on it.

5. Weekly Registration. Each week teams must register race tires they are bringing into the speedway that they want in their inventory. Always register tires that you are bringing to the track that you want in your inventory that have not been registered in any previous weeks. Teams must register race tires prior to the car entering onto the track for time trials, heats, consi or features. You may add tires to your inventory at any time during a race event prior to racing on those tires.

Attention: Seekonk Sport Truck Owners 4/22/08

NEWS BULLETIN

Attention: Seekonk Sport Truck Owners 4/22/08

With the change to Hoosier racing tires this spring, we have identified a problem that we would like to bring to the attention of our Sport Truck teams immediately. During practice, it was determined that GM chassis trucks are prone to have an issue with the right front tire rubbing the outer tie rod. At this time, it seems to have only affected the GM trucks. We have developed the following options to combat this issue. Unless other chassis are found to have a problem these options will be given to GM owners only.

1) Spindles: Some trucks have moved the steering arm on the spindle to give a clearance of no less than one-half (1/2”) an inch between the tie rod and tire. Please note that this modification should only be done by someone who specializes in this type of work.

2) Spacer plates: These may be used, with a maximum width not to exceed 3/8” (three-eighths of an inch). The plates may be aluminum or steel and must be used on both front wheels. Rear wheels may have spacers if desired and must be the same size on both wheels. Five-eighth (5/8) studs are mandatory if spacers are used, and must be long enough to accept the spacers.

Sport Truck teams with additional questions or requiring clarification of this rule may contact Race Director David Alburn at the speedway or via e-mail at ssruleman@aol.com.

LATE MODEL AND PRO STOCK TEAMS: TIRES

LATE MODEL AND PRO STOCK TEAMS:

"We are still going to review which tire rule will be used in 2008 but want our teams to see what this new option is. In short, it would still use the same amount of tires used during the season as the old tire rule would, it just gives the team more options in how they use them. We will still talk about this during the next two test and tune dates. I would like to have the official tire rule out during the April 19th test date". -David Alburn

SEEKONK SPEEDWAY NEW TIRE RULE 2008
Pro Stock & Late Model Divisions

American Racer EC83 & EC84 and Goodyear D2472 & D2682 are the official tires for the Pro Stocks & Late Model divisions; these tires must be purchased from Seekonk Speedway to be eligible for use. All tires are marked with a numbers system from the manufacture that the teams will use to record tire usage at the track. Any team found to deceive this system as outlined in general rules 11.7 & 11.8 will be penalized by the Race Director.

1. Each team must register their tires by the number system located on their tires. Each team can only register the maximum number of tires allowed in their division each week.
Maximum Inventory Pro Stock – 10 Tires / Late Model – 8 Tires

2. Each division will have a season maximum allowance, referred to as (SMA). This number will be the maximum amount of tires each team can register during the season. Teams will use the SMA number to decide how they want to manage their tire usage during the season. The SMA number is based off a two tire a night rule with added tires for extra distance races (if needed) and an allotment of tires for unseen circumstances. The SMA number is reduced each week starting with the first race event when new tires are brought into each teams inventory and if a race event is cancelled. Teams must remove old tires when they bring in new tires and not exceed their maximum inventory listed above. The SMA number will be adjusted accordingly for teams starting late in the season.
Pro Stock – 54 Tires / Late Models – 50 Tires

3. Register procedures are as follows: When teams arrive at the track the driver or crew chief must record the tires going into their inventory and submit their tire card to the track tire manager. Each week when a new register card is given any new numbers on the card from the pervious week would be considered new tires and deducted from the teams SMA number. Teams must record and file their register card BEFORE the first Qualifying race of their division. If a team does not submit their register card in time they may loose the right for any tire changes that night, this would revert back to the teams last submitted card from the pervious week attend.

4. Each team can ONLY bring the maximum inventory allowed to the track each week, including the tires on the car. All tires MUST be listed on the tire inventory card for that night. Teams can not practice, run a heat, consi or feature with any other tires then what has been registered for that night. Teams found with more then the allowed tires may be penalized the use of any tire changes the next week attended.

5. Teams may change their inventory and bring in tires rotated out of their OWN previously used inventory. These tires must be noted on their register card and reported to the tire manager. When a previously registered tire is brought back into inventory the tire manager must visually inspect them to verify their usage. Only 1 used tire at a time may be brought back into inventory any night. Tire manager may choose to allow more if warrants.

6. Tires will be monitored with depth gauges and durometer readings and recorded for back up each week. These readings will be used by the Tech officials to monitor tires that are inconsistent with normal readings as outlined in the general rules 11.7 & 11.8

7. If a race is canceled for any reason and no laps were run. No register cards will be accepted till the next week and the maximum allowance number will be reduced either by two or four depending on race event canceled.

8. If a race is canceled before the start of the Pro Stock or Late Model feature and these races are made up the next week you must use the SAME register card from the original feature and then tire replacements can be made for the next events. Races made up in later weeks may have different restrictions.

9. Tire purchases are only allowed at the Speedway either on Saturday nights at the pit ticket window or at the track office during the week between 9AM to 5PM track # 508-336-9959. Please call before arrival.

10. Tires can ONLY be left at the Speedway if they have been dismounted by the track tire changers, tires MAY NOT be brought to the track to be left on the grounds. No tires can be left at any competitors pit, they may be penalized.

2008 Information Updates

To Our Fans and Competitors-
The speedway continues to work on various aspects of the program that we hope will reflect positive change in 2008. Several new sponsorship partners have joined our team for the upcoming season, and we're lookign forward to working with each of them and putting our best foot forward. Some of the changes that we've bene working on are identified in this week's blog.

PIT CREW LICENSES FOR MINORS:
In response to requests from our competitors, we have re-evaluated the minimum age allowed to work on race cars in the pit area. We agree that many high school age (15-17) boys and girls would like to participate in our race teams and gain experience before turning 18. Therefore, the minimum age has been lowered to 15. However, all minors between the ages of 15 and 17 must hold a pit crew license. BOTH parents and or legal guardians MUST sign consent forms which will need to be notarized. A parent or legal guardian must also be present at the track with the minor at all times to be able to give consent for treatment in the case of a medical emergency. Fee to purchase and process a minor’s license is $25. For more information, please contact the track office directly.

FAST TRACK MEDICAL RESPONSE SYSTEMS
In 2008, Seekonk Speedway will implement the medical history bracelets for drivers, crew members, and track officials that are currently in use at various facilities including Thompson and Stafford. More information will be provided on this process at Saturday’s awards banquet.

RANDOM DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING
Seekonk Speedway will reinstitute random drug and alcohol testing for competitors and officials in 2008. An independent firm will be utilized to administer tests and evaluate the results.

GATE TIMES
In 2008, the FRONT GATE admission time will be moved back from 4 PM to 3 PM. Management is aware of the fact that fans often begin lining up early to gain admission to the speedway and that they are often not able to watch the early rounds of practice. This is an easy fix. By admitting patrons through the front gates at 3 PM, the speedway hopes to remedy these issues. Pit gates will continue to open at 2:30 PM on Saturdays. ALL CONCESSION ITEMS will be available for purchase when the gates open. When fans and or competitors walk through the gates, it is our desire to make food and beverages available immediately. NO MORE WAITING for the grill to open or food to be prepared. OUR GOAL is to be ready to go when the gates swing open. Concession stands will be open at our pre-season practice sessions. The front grandstands will be open to the general public for free on April 5, April 19, and May 3. It makes no sense to have people trying to peer in through the locked gates and fence. Come in and check things out.
On Saturdays, competitors may also be asked to participate in pre-race entertainment including interviews and autograph sessions with fans as time permits. If the tours can do it, we can, too! Let's work to build our fan base.

KEY DATES:
February 1-Registrations for 2008 begin
April 5-First Saturday Pre-Season Practice
May 4-Sunday Opening Day for four weekly divisions with NEMA, NEMA Lites (no extra distance races)
May 10-First Saturday night show
May 24-First Pro Stock 75 lap feature
June 6-Fast Friday Series begins

POINTS
Based on the requests of competitors who attended the winter meetings, the speedway is re-evaluating the distribution of championship points. The distribution of points for heats and features WILL BE CHANGING. Expect to see five points between first and second place for winning a heat race or a feature race and a three-point gap between descending positions.
