Speedway Rules Meetings Scheduled To Begin This Week

Speedway Rules Meetings Scheduled To Begin This Week
Todd Baptista
In preparation of its 63rd annual auto racing season, Seekonk Speedway will begin its off-season rules meetings for all divisions this week. “These meetings will give our competitors the opportunity to voice any ideas, concerns, or questions that they wish to share,” Assistant General Manager and Race Director David Alburn explains. “We have no significant changes planned for any of our divisions heading into the new season. With costs escalating and the economy sluggish, we don’t foresee making changes that will force our teams to spend more money. We are, however, open to ideas and encourage discussion that will benefit short track racing as a whole.”
All meetings will take place at the American Legion Hall, located at 350 Fall River Avenue in Seekonk. The speedway’s second tier Late Model division will meet on Wednesday, November 14, at 6:30 PM, and be followed by the Pro Stock division meeting at 8:15 PM. Sport Truck competitors are invited to attend on Thursday, November 15 at 6:30 PM, with Street Stock owners and drivers slated to meet at 8:15 that evening. Seekonk Youth Racing Association teams will meet with speedway officials on Wednesday, November 28 at 6:30 PM with Pure Stock teams following immediately thereafter at 8:15 PM.
In the weeks following the conclusion of the 2007 racing season, speedway officials have been planning the new season’s schedule, solidifying sponsorship associations, and actively building a new team to carry the 1/3-mile oval into the future. Alburn will return to the race director’s post in the New Year, replacing Len Ellis, Jr. Longtime pit area official Georgianna Bolduc has been promoted to the position of chief pit steward, the first female appointee to the role in the track’s long history. Additional changes in marketing, entertainment, and concessions have also taken place. “We are grateful for the service our team members have given in the past,” Vice-President and General Manager Francis Venditti states. “There are a lot of factors to consider when trying to manage a business in today’s economy. Addressing costs incurred, the need to keep up with the competition when vying for a portion of the public’s entertainment budget, and the importance of maintaining a cohesive and streamlined team all enter into these decisions.”
Mr. Alburn is expected to announce that the Hoosier Racing Tires which were tested by the speedway late in the season will become the tire of choice for the Sport Truck division in 2008. “There are a number of rumors that have circulated, as can be expected any time changes take place,” Alburn admits. “There are no plans to consolidate our Pro Stock and Late Model divisions, and no sale of speedway buildings or facilities is in the works.” The popular True Value Modified Racing Series and Northeastern Midget Association touring classes are expected to return for multiple visits to the Cement Palace in 2008, along with the annual Open Wheel Wednesday and Francis Farm Mid-Season Championship events, among others. Mr. Venditti has also declared his continued support for the fledgling Fast Friday Series for Pure Stock, SYRA, and Go-Kart classes. “We are all in agreement that the future of our Saturday night program rests in the development of young talent as featured in the Fast Friday Series,” Alburn echoes, “and are dedicated to forging ahead with these divisions as well.”
For additional information on the upcoming rules meetings, please contact the speedway office directly at (508)-336-9959.

DAV Memorial Festival Of Racing

Seekonk Speedway 62nd annual season comes to a spectacular conclusion the weekend of October 6-7, with over 650 laps of green flag racing, 10 different divisions, and in excess of $47,000 in purse money and another $5,700 in lap money bonuses on the line for the D. Anthony Venditti Memorial Festival of Racing. The annual event honors the memory of the late speedway founder who constructed the 1/3-mile Bay State oval in 1946 and served as its President until his passing in 1991. Highlighting the card will be a $14,700 100-lap open competition Pro Stock race with $3,000 going to the victor, $275 to qualify, and an additional $2,500 up for grabs in lap money awards. The True Value Modified Racing Series, Northeastern Midget Association, and Pro Four Modified Series will also be in action, along with open competition events for Late Models, Street Stocks, Sport Trucks/Four Cylinders, Pure Stocks, and 600 and 750 restrictor-plate SYRA Mini Cups.

The weekend begins with an open practice for all divisions on Friday, October 5. The pit area will open at 9 AM, with practice rounds running non-stop from 11 AM to 5 PM. Pit admission is $20. The speedway will then host an employee appreciation barbecue for the Route 6 facility’s staff under the turn four tent, beginning at 6 PM.

Pit gates will swing open at 8 AM on Saturday, October 6, with technical inspections beginning at 8:45 AM. Practice for all divisions will run from 10 AM to 1:15 PM. Starting positions for the qualifying races will be determined by the luck of the draw. Qualifying heats will begin at 1:30 PM with “straight up” starts for the features coming from the Late Model, Street Stock, and Sport Truck/Four Cylinder preliminaries. A random redraw of the highest finishing Pro Stocks will set the stage for the 24-car main event. Consolation rounds will follow as needed for all divisions to fill in the final feature race starting spots.

The SYRA Mini Cup 600 and 750-restrictor plate divisions will open the feature race schedule, with a 30-lap $250 to win main for the Sport Trucks/Four Cylinders sandwiched in between their 25-lap events. The Pro Four Modified Series will roll out their 25-lap feature next, and be followed by the Pure Stock class, which will bring Saturday’s program to a close with a 25-lap feature. Lap money for the Sport Trucks/Four Cylinders is posted at $25 per lap with $20 per lap for the Pure Stocks.

The pit area will open at 9 AM on Sunday in preparation for the track’s annual pit party, giving fans of all ages the opportunity to inspect the race cars and trucks up close and visit with the drivers and teams. The pit party, which begins at 10 AM, will also include the presentation of the Seekonk Sentinel racing magazine-sponsored Most Popular Driver awards and the top qualifying Pro Stocks redrawing for starting position. At 11:30, the pit area will be cleared in preparation for the afternoon’s activities, which will begin with limited practice for NEMA midgets, True Value Modifieds, and Pro Stocks at 12 PM.

The first of five Sunday features, a 30-lap $250 to win 26-car event for the Street Stocks, will kick off the festivities at 1 PM. A 25-lap main for the Northeastern Midget Association will follow. The 50-lap open competition Late Model event will pay $700 of the $4,460 purse to the victor, and will immediately precede the Pro Stock main, which is expected to draw competitors from New Hampshire, Connecticut, and New York. Street Stocks, Late Models, and Pro Stocks will also vie for lap money, which has been posted at $25 per lap led. The True Value Modified Racing Series will bring the weekend and the 2007 season to an exciting conclusion with a 100 green flag lap feature.

Two-day race weekend grandstand admission tickets are available now online at www.seekonkspeedway.com or can be purchased on race day for $25. Tickets for children 12 and under are priced at $5 for the weekend. For more information, visit online or contact the track office at (508)-336-9959.
